What is VitalEyes™ Complete Ocular Formula?

Aging is a strong risk factor for visual impairment while maintaining vision is correlated with increased independence for America’s rapidly aging population [1-3]. Because the eyes are rich in nerve tissue and small blood vessels, they are especially vulnerable to threats from oxidative damage from free radicals. Factors that can impact eye health include exposure to sunlight [4], unstable blood sugar [5], and diets low in antioxidants and high in inflammatory ingredients [6]. VitalEyes™ Complete is a research-based ocular protection formula, that is rich in antioxidants, within a comprehensive multi-vitamin/mineral supplement. It was designed according to three well-known large research studies- The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) [7], AREDS2 [8], and the Veteran’s Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial (LAST) [9] that all measured effects of certain nutrients and antioxidants on age-related macular degeneration and declining vision. As nearly 9 out of 10 participants in the second AREDS trial were on a multivitamin in addition to the AREDS formula [8] a combined product is an efficient and cost-effective choice. Choose VitalEyes™ Complete for research-backed eye health support provided within a daily multivitamin.

How does VitalEyes™ Complete Ocular Formula Work?

The ocular health support provided by VitalEyes™ Complete can be credited to a number of nutrients featured in the AREDS studies:

Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C is the most prevalent antioxidant in eye tissue, which is highly vulnerable to reactive oxygen species. Studies have shown that vitamin C may help protect the retina from oxidative damage caused by light exposure [10]. A higher intake of vitamin C has also been associated with a reduced risk of eye disease related to oxidative stress, including neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) [6,11].

Vitamin E: A potent fat-soluble antioxidant, vitamin E has been shown to reduce the biomarkers of total oxidative stress and inflammation in the body [12]. Optimal levels of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) in the diet is also associated with a reduced risk of neovascular AMD [11].

Zinc: An essential trace mineral, zinc helps to bring vitamin A to the eyes to produce melanin, a protective pigment. Zinc deficiency is associated with impaired vision [11]. Some studies suggest that supplementation with zinc may slow the rate of progression of macular degeneration [7,8]. The current zinc levels in VitalEyes™ Complete reflect the optimal doses tested in the AREDS2 trial as most effective to support macular health [8].

Lutein and Zeaxanthin isomers: the only carotenoids found in the macula, these phytonutrients have long been associated with eye health. They are known to act as blue light filters and have antioxidant properties that may aid in macular health protection. When given to participants in the second AREDS trial, progression towards advanced AMD slowed down [8].

Our current VitalEyes™ formulation also features Lutemax® 2020 from OmniActive. Lutemax® 2020 provides lutein and both isomers of zeaxanthin (RR and RS (meso) zeaxanthin) in the same 5 to 1 ratio that can be found naturally in the diet. Each of these nutrients protects a different area of the macula [14]. Lutemax® 2020 provides the only lutein that has been USP verified. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated OmniActive’s Lutemax® 2020 provides benefits to eye health including positive effects on macular health, photo-stress recovery, blue light filtering, and visual performance [15].

Additionally, OmniActive takes social responsibility seriously and has implemented initiatives that support its agricultural provider communities, such as assured crop buy-back and rewarding environmentally conscious decision making. They also promote the health of rural communities by partnering with local clinics to support eye health and women’s health issues, such as female hygiene needs and common nutritional issues like iron deficiency.

Additional ocular support included in VitalEyes™ Complete includes:

Antioxidant Support: Mixed carotenoids, selenium, CoQ10, and lipoic acid to protect cells from damage from oxidative stress.

Taurine: An amino acid that is found in high amounts in the retina. A deficiency of taurine is associated with degenerative changes in the photoreceptors of the eye [16}.

Bilberry extract: the anthocyanins in bilberry have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Recent studies have shown the potential of bilberry to reduce reactive oxygen species threatening neuroreceptors to assist in maintaining normal visual function [17]. The extract also exhibits positive effects on vascular function in ways that may support retinal health [18].

Biologically active B-vitamins: including L-methylfolate, methylcobalamin (B-12), riboflavin 5’ phosphate, and pyridoxal 5’ phosphate. Folate and B-12 support the maintenance of normal homocysteine levels. Hyperhomocysteinemia (high homocysteine levels) is a risk factor for impaired ocular function [19].

Vitamin D-3: low serum vitamin D levels are associated with many health concerns, including ocular function. Studies have found associations between low vitamin D intake, low vitamin D serum status, and a higher incidence of advanced age-related macular degeneration [20,21].
