Calcium citrate is one of the most bioavailable forms of calcium. If calcium must be taken on an empty stomach, or if an individual has low levels of stomach acid, calcium citrate is the preferred form for proper absorption [1].

Uses: Bone tissue is primarily made up of protein and calcium (Ca). By weight, bone tissue is 70% mineral, 22% protein and 8% water. As bone tissue undergoes continuous remodeling, intake of minerals and amino acid substrates are crucial to support the formation of new bone. Dietary Ca and protein play active roles in bone metabolism. Diets high in either animal or plant-based protein (such as the standard American diet) are known to cause increased renal calcium excretion, increased bone resorption, decreased renal tubular calcium reabsorption, and physiochemical dissolution of bone tissue [2]. An inadequate intake of calcium can lead to a sequential reduction in the circulating ionized calcium concentration, which can lead to chronic increase in bone turnover and a steady loss of bone mass [2]. As most americans do not take in adequate Ca from their diets, supplementing Ca can balance circulating Ca levels, thereby supporting bone health and mitigating the above mentioned risks [1].

As Ca is also a necessary component in a myriad of cell signalling pathways, sufficient circulating Ca is critical for proper nerve function and cellular health throughout the body [3]. Proper neuronal processing, the contraction of cardiac cells, and gene transcription are just a few examples of cell processes that cannot be completed without sufficient cellular Ca [3].
