Calcium (Ca) is the main regulatory and signaling molecule for all muscle fibers. The contractile properties of muscle fibers are therefore dependent on the availability of Ca to muscle cells, and its transport for signaling and handling. The Ca signaling apparatus (the calcium cycle) largely determines the contraction and relaxation properties of a muscle fiber. Therefore, muscle plasticity, response, and function is closely linked with and highly dependent on the Ca handling system .
Magnesium (Mg) is also involved in numerous processes that affect muscle function. These processes include oxygen uptake, energy production and electrolyte balance. Due to these roles, Mg has been the target of clinical research related to leg cramping. Studies have shown that Mg may aid in the relief of leg cramping for adults, with even more significant benefits marked during pregnancy [2,3].
The relationship between Mg status and exercise has also received a great deal of research attention. Exercise has been shown to induce a redistribution of Mg in the body to accommodate metabolic needs. There is evidence that marginal magnesium deficiency can impair exercise performance and exacerbate the negative consequences of strenuous exercise (e.g., oxidative stress). Strenuous exercise increases loss of Mg through urine and sweat, thereby increasing Mg requirements by 10-20% .
Shifts in potassium (K) during high-intensity muscular activity or exercise may also be a substantial contributor to fatigue in skeletal muscle (as opposed to the heart, where the K balance is controlled much more effectively) . Microdialysis studies have demonstrated that muscle activity is associated with an
elevation of extracellular K concentration. This effect could play a major role in the development of muscle fatigue and reduced excitability .
Maintaining a constant state of cellular zinc nutrition, or homeostasis, is essential for normal function of the human muscular system . Boron and chromium are also essential components of human muscle tissue and the cellular signaling systems necessary for proper muscle function [7,8].
Source Materials: Minerals are mined. Citric acid (for citrates) and L-leucine are made by fermentation. Niacin (for chromium niacinate) and malic acid are synthesized. All ingredients are vegan and non-GMO.
