Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid that is critical to the maintenance of cellular function. PS is particularly concentrated in the brain and helps to keep heartbeat coordination, hormone secretion, and memory-related pathways functioning smoothly. Research indicates that when PS levels naturally decline with age, memory and learning ability tend to decline in parallel. Supplementation can help to counteract this loss, supporting a healthy brain and cellular function throughout the aging process. PS also helps to reduce unhealthy, elevated cortisol levels in the body, therby reducing physiological stress and allowing for more restful, sustained sleep.*

What is PS-100?

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a naturally occurring phospholipid that is a structural component of cell membranes and is particularly concentrated in the brain. Our bodies do make some PS internally, but that internal production tends to decrease as we age, and supplementation can help make up for that deficit. Our PS is isolated from soy lecithin and delivered in 100 mg dose softgels.

How does PS-100 Work?

PS helps support healthy brain function by helping to keep memory-related pathways running smoothly. As part of cell membranes, PS plays an important role in cell-to-cell communication and transfer of biochemical messages known to be involved in the longevity of neurons, neurite growth, and the development of new synapses [1].

Our nerve cells typically deteriorate as we age, partially due to a natural decline in PS levels [2]. Unfortunately, this degradation also impairs neurotransmission and can affect our ability to learn, remember, and stay alert [2]. Phosphatidylserine supplementation may help to slow this age-related nerve deterioration and subsequent memory loss, while also supporting new learning, positive mood, and emotional well-being [1].

PS may also help to reduce your physical reactions to stress and improve your sleep. PS plays a role in the modulation of cortisol. Dysregulated cortisol concentrations are correlated with poor sleep quality, and even minor periods of sleep loss can deregulate cortisol release [3]. By slowing the hyperactive production of cortisol in the body, unhealthy, elevated cortisol levels naturally decrease, and consequently, more restful sleep can occur [4]. One study reported that subjects who took PS supplements showed a more relaxed state before and after a mental stress test [1].

Last but not least, in children with ADHD, PS has recently been shown to improve short-term memory and increase attention [2]. A study in 2012 reported that children who took PS and omega-3 fatty acids experienced a significantly greater reduction in hyperactive/impulsive behavior as well as an improvement in mood compared to those given a placebo [5].

What is the Suggested Use for PS-100?

  • Maintains neuron health and communication. PS helps to combat the degenerative effects of aging on the brain’s neurons and cell-to-cell signaling.
  • Supports normal memory and cognition. By protecting your neurons, you can protect and support you memory, mood, and ability to think clearly.
  • Modulates cortisol response.
  • Promotes sustained, restful sleep. By helping to regulate cortisol levels, PS supports a reduced state of stress and better sleep.
  • Supports attention and impulse control in children with ADHD
